101110The defense team for Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan has retained prominent forensic psychologist Xavier Amador. The New York-based expert has been involved in several high-profile cases involving the military, including those of PFC Lynndie England (of Abu Ghraib infamy) and U.S. Army sergeant Hasan Akbar, who killed two fellow officers and wounded 14 soldiers in Kuwait in 2003. He was also a defense expert in the trial of would-be 9/11 hijacker Zacarias Moussaoui.

Now is not the time to get “any licensed psychologist or physician/psychiatrist who is available” for the 706 board.

Dr. Amador is a highly respected psychologist who likes to deal with these very public cases. The Army needs someone who can counter his testimony if needed and not just anyone who is available. Walter Reed has such a program, but there is no reason not to pick someone from outside the military.

ME, concur, both as to WRAMC and outside. But does WRAMC have someone? I know I’ve been referred there for a murder case because some “field” docs can’t do a Rorscharch and associated evaluations for psychosis. The best the field docs could come up with is a ‘short psychotic episode.

I can imagine there’s more depth at WRAMC.

When I was still in the Reserves, we had a yearly meeting at Menninger Clinic at which both active and reserve psychiatrists participated from all services. At that time there were a number of active duty docs with forensic training (you get a bonus for doing so) and this still should be true. The other services had them too.

They should be able to find someone, preferably several someones, to do the examination.

I might add that Dr. Amador’s participation in the trials mentioned above didn’t seem to make a lot of difference, at least according the the Wikipedia accounts.
